Jaycee Homes

Jaycees Brantford Non-Profit Homes Corp. (JC Homes) founded by JCI Brantford, is a housing provider with a specific focus on providing affordable housing to families. Since 1983, Jaycee Homes has been a key provider of safe affordable housing in the City of Brantford. Today JC Homes has a total of 83 scattered properties in the City.

JCI Brantford has been in Brantford since 1942 and was incorporated in 1967. They were best known for the annual Santa Claus Parade and Jaycees Park, but they also ran annual events like Christmas Tree Sales & Trees for the Less Fortunate and many more. The organization was designed to keep ideas fresh and allow individuals to learn and grow through community-oriented projects. Each member was given the opportunity to grow as an individual as well as help the organization within the community.

Motivated by the JCI Creed in 1983, the organization was looking for a new service project when the opportunity to purchase several homes in Brantford came up. JCI Brantford started Jaycees Non-Profit Homes. The federal government had introduced a housing initiative that would support organizations like Jaycees Non-Profit Homes. This project had many objectives: To serve the community by offering a low affordable rent to families. To give families the opportunity to save for their own house while learning the ins and outs of taking care of a house. To provide the opportunity for mixed incomes in a community which would reduce the stigma of social
housing. To increase membership and give the opportunity for mentorship, growth and development in many aspects of housing. To drive the housing market at a time when interest rates were very high.

The project was a very big success with both a large list of applicants to choose from and a huge growth in membership. In 1985, Jaycees Non-Profit Homes, purchased 30 more homes. Both of these projects were in partnership with CMHC and their agreement stipulated that 25% of the homes had to offer a Rent Geared to Income rent.  Jaycees Non-Profit Homes was inspired by the need for subsidized rent in the City of Brantford and was able to secure 24 more houses in 1987 being part of a provincial program that supported 100% Rent
Geared to Income rent.

We continue to...

Serve the community by offering a low affordable rent to families.

Give families the opportunity to save for their own house while learning the role of taking care of a house.

Provide the opportunity for mixed incomes in a community which would reduce the stigma of social housing.

Increase membership and give the opportunity for mentorship, growth and development in many aspects of housing.

Drive the housing market at a time when interest rates were very high.

Run by a volunteer Board of Directors, who have been good stewards of this project for the last 35+ years, and despite the funding changes and reductions, JC Homes continues to offer true affordable housing in the City of Brantford. The properties are managed very efficiently by 2 full time staff and a part time administrator.
